Grade 3-7-- An etymological romp through the history and traditions associated with the holiday. In addition, Graham-Barber provides a source of such information as the names of the Mayflower passengers, a list of "Curious Colonial Punishments," and a chart comparing historical and present-day harvest festivals around the world. She divides the discussion into six sections, each introduced through a sentence or sentences using all the words featured in that section. The origin of each highlighted word is given along with historical anecdotes, many of which will be new to most readers, even those familiar with the history of Plymouth colony. Some of the information seems extraneous such as the inclusion of a verse on exploring from T. S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and sometimes the attempts at humor are strained. A good index makes it easy to find information despite the atypical organization of the text. Lewin's black-and-white pen-and-ink cartoons humorously decorate the narrative. Although a bit of a hodgepodge, this compendium of interesting facts and unusual happenings should prove useful to most libraries. --Louise L. Sherman, Anna C. Scott School, Leonia, NJ
