ROGUE WAVE AND OTHER RED-BLOODED SEA STORIES

Tossed in the thundering waters of a killer wave, Melissa fights for her life, trapped in the hull of an upside-down boat. . .

Michael seeks revenge after his father's brutal death in the jaws of a great white shark. . .

Blinded by his own blood, navy pilot Jack Grimes attempts to defy death by landing on an aircraft carrier. . .

An apprentice seaman aboard an American freighter is plunged into the cold sea. The suck of the hull draws him cruelly along below the waterline, knifing him on barnacles, finally releasing him into the white water wake, as his ship disappears on the horizon. . .

THE SEA HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PLACE OF HIGH ADVENTURE--FASCINATING, MYSTERIOUS, DANGEROUS AND DEADLY. IN EIGHT GRIPPING TALES, AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR THEODORE TAYLOR CAPTURES THE POWERFUL DRAMA OF THE MIGHTY SEA AND THE EXCITEMENT OF THOSE WHO DARE TO CHALLENGE IT.

About the Author:
Theodore Taylor was born in North Carolina and began writing at the age of thirteen as a cub reporter for the Portsmouth, Virginia Evening Star. Leaving home at seventeen to join the Washington Daily News as a copy boy, he worked his way toward New York City and became an NBC network sportswriter at the age of nineteen. Mr. Taylor is the author of a dozen books for young readers, among them the award-winning The Cay. He lives in Laguna Beach, California, with his wife, Flora.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 7 Up. Nobody writes sea stories like Taylor, and this collection of eight tales should satisfy his many fans. The pieces vary greatly in setting and period, with a wide range of characters and emotions. In the title story, young Scoot Atkins becomes trapped in the cabin when a rogue wave overturns her boat. Fighting her way out with the assistance of her brother, Scoot learns a great deal about herself and the sea. In "Out There," Danny Aldo, 17, faces ridicule when his glimpse of what he believes to be a large eel is transformed into a sea monster by a mocking police force. Nineteen-year-old Michael Trinity hunts down and destroys the great white shark that killed his father in "The Butcher." "Hauling Gold" focuses on Harry Brand, the middle-aged captain of an out-of-date ship, who gets a chance to redeem his reputation as an alcoholic via the shipment of gold bullion from South Africa to England. Overall, the stories are well written and intriguing, with "Rogue Wave" and "The Butcher" having the most appeal for young readers. Libraries needing more sea adventure need look no further than this intriguing collection.?Melissa Hudak, North Suburban District Library, Roscoe, IL
