This is the first biography and major compilation of the work of Edward Borein, the renowned cowboy artist, who captured in oil, watercolor, and especially etching, the rich visual reality of the Old West. A close friend of Charles M. Russell, Borein is reputed to have been described by Russell as an artist superior to himself, and today his major work may be found in the most important Western Americana museums and collections. Gifted with a prodigious memory, Edward Borein cast a cold eye over cowboys and horses, Indians and buffalo and brought to canvas and sketch pad an uncanny accuracy of detail that served not only art, but historical truth-earning him a niche in the pantheon of great Western artists that included Remington, Russell, Fanny and Moran. Born in San Leandro, across the bay from San Francisco, in 1872, Borein drifted away from formal schooling at the age of seventeen, and into the life of a cowboy, wandering up and down the Pacific Coast from Oregon to the Baja Peninsula, working his trade and spending long hours sketching men, animals and gear-be it the twist of a lariat or the lowstrung neck of a bucking horse. At 22 he sold his first drawing, and soon after settled down to the dogged pursuit of technique and line. In time that quest led him to New York City where his studio on West 42nd Street filled up with rapidly improving artwork, Western memorabilia, and a host of famous friends. Men like Will Rogers, Leo Carrillo, Irvin S. Cobb, Buffalo Bill Cody and Theodore Roosevelt found in Borein a kindred spirit who shared their love of the wide-open spaces and the campfire dynamics of a good tall tale. But the artist was never quite comfortable in the East and in 1919 moved permanently back to California, eventually settling in Santa Barbara, whereupon his work began to achieve the acclaim it deserved. It has increased steadily in value and esteem since then.
