Grade 3 Up The contents page of this collection lists the country of origin for each of the six folktales included, and boy, is it ever needed! Each of the tales has been homogenized to the point that it is nearly impossible to place it into a distinct culture or location. Since these tales were originally published in German, this blandness may be due to poor translations. As for the tales themselves, they contain motifs familiar to most readers (three sons in search of a wife, mistaken identity, and dire predictions for an infant's future), but only the version of the Swedish "The Castle East of the Sun and West of the Moon" will be vaguely recognizable. Uninspired writing aside, these tales also suffer from awkward page design and garish illustrations. The watercolor, chalk, and pencil illustrations are stilted and poorly executed and seem at odds with the text. There is little to recommend this collection of tales. Denise A.
