To paraphrase Churchill, Dorsett is an arrogant man, with much to be arrogant about. At Pitt, he won the Heisman Trophy. In his brilliant NFL career, he has rushed for more than 12,000 yards, and is second to Walter Payton on the all-time rushing list. In this autobiography, Dorsett describes, among other things, his tenure with the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos. He had an array of problems during his 11 years with Dallas: financial difficulties; his refusal to conform to the Cowboys' rigid football system and their attempts to control his life; and some well-publicized altercations. Dorsett comments frankly on the Dallas organization, particularly the different treatment of white and black players. We do not see much of Dorsett the person, however. Dorsett wants to be remembered as "an athlete who . . . gave 100 percent all the time. . . ." For public and high school libraries.

On the gridiron, Dorsett was runner par excellence, complaining only that he was not given enough playing time; off the field, however, the young black man from western Pennsylvania had a difficult time adjusting to the racially prejudiced lifestyle of the Dallas area. He found coach Tom Landry, whom he calls a brilliant tactician, cold and unfeeling.
