Historical and linguistic facts about names and name origins are summarized for as many names as possible, showing why certain names come into and go out of fashion. An outgrowth of the author's earlier highly entertaining Words ( LJ 7/82), this book has chapters devoted to names of boats, cars, teams, corporations, robots, nicknames, hurricanes/himmicanes, and many other human preoccupations. The treatment is playful but literate and concerned with accuracy (Dr. Guillotine did not invent it). The best chapter features items from the John Q. Raspberry Memorial Collection of Names.
