The authors, two Philadelphia cardiologists, accurately point out that surgery cannot "cure" atherosclerosis (the hardening of the major arteries around the heart); only changes in an individual's personal habits can offer hopes of a healthier life. Their book, written in a chatty and anecdotal fashion, addresses some of the modifiable risk factors for heart disease, offering plans for reducing hypertension, cholesterol, stress, and smoking. Five patients are followed as they advance through the nine months of the plan. Charts, tables, recipes, sample diets, and a glossary are included. Unfortunately, the sometimes too-chatty wording cuts out the "meat" of the message and glosses over some things that merit additional explanation. The Yale University School of Medicine Heart Book ( LJ 3/1/92) is a better choice for small collections; buy this only where demand is high.
