Clickety Clack,
Sweater for Jack
went Mrs. McDockerty's knitting.
Tuggity Roll,
Wool in a Bowl
went Mrs. McDockerty's yarn.
Mrs. McDockerty sat on her stool
with knitting in her lap,
yarn in a bowl,
and bowl on the floor.
Clickety Clack.
Cat walked in, Sweater for Jack.
She watched yarn
with her head cocked one way,
Tuggity Roll,
and then the other,
Wool in a Bowl.
All at once, Cat pounced on yarn.
"Cat! Yarn! Stop fighting this instant!" shouted Mrs. McDockerty.
She was angry.
Mrs. McDockerty untangled Cat and yarn.
She put her stool on the table, then climbed up.
Clickety Clack,
Sweater for Jack
went Mrs. McDockerty's knitting.
Tuggity Roll,
Wool in a Bowl
went Mrs. McDockerty's yarn.
Mrs. McDockerty sat on her stool
with knitting in her lap,

PreSchool-Grade 2 --Mrs. McDockerty is trying to knit a sweater for Jack, but her efforts are thwarted by the cat pouncing on the yarn , the dog leaping at the knitting, and the pig knocking over the table onto which she has climbed to escape the cat and the dog. When young Jack arrives, he quickly sizes up the situation and realizes that escorting the mischievous animals outside might be more effective than constructing a higher and higher edifice for Mrs. McDockerty to escape their playful paws. This rollicking cumulative tale is told with a "Clickety Clack" and a "Tuggity Roll," the rhythm being replaced by prose whenever the knitting is interrupted by the household menagerie. O'Neill's watercolor illustrations capture perfectly the trials and tribulations of the absent-minded Mrs. McDockerty, and children will delight in anticipation of each minor domestic disaster.
