1987, revised 3rd hardcover edition (of a title first published in 1965), Lippincott, NY. 364 pages. Great black and white illustrations throughout. The author, Townsend, is a wonderful children's writer himself. He provides an admirable study of children's books in the United States, Britain, Canada, and Australia. This combines scholarship, readability, a search for forgotten or neglected writers, and surprises in every chapter. He begins his work by profiling literature before 1840, and brings his study up to the date noted. This is great stuff, a book for parents, librarians, and those simply interested in the development of children's literature. The illustrations are plentiful and match the fine text.
