Ages 5-7. Seth, a quiet New England boy who lives with his grandparents, spends most of his time roaming the forest near his home. His closest friends are the forest animals he protects by bringing them food and caring for their injured. One winter day Seth falls ill, the result of his extended daily trips in the wind and cold. While recuperating on Christmas Eve, he spies an angry dog pursuing a doe and her fawn. Without thinking of himself, Seth runs out to their rescue and collapses in a clearing. Later, when his worried grandparents and neighbors come looking for him, the forest animals guide them to the spot where Seth lies. DeChristopher's naturalistic oil paintings mesh perfectly with Holmes' simple tale, clearly expressing Seth's feelings for the woodland creatures. Some may question Seth's rash disregard for his own health, but his oneness with nature is admirable. A subdued tale appropriate for a winter story hour, this may also be welcomed by those looking for noncommercialized holiday fare. Kay Weisman
