From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2–In this second adventure, Happy Dog and Jack Cat look for something to do on a hot summer day. When the friends see that Captain Corkey Pup is sponsoring a contest for the best "walla-pa-doo" (something special that participants make from their imaginations), they decide to enter. They search the junkyard for stuff to use and try several times before coming up with the perfect object, a walla-pa-doo that shoots water out on its sizzling hot inventors. At this point, they don't care about the results of the contest for they feel that they're already winners. Grubb uses acrylic paint on canvas to create cartoonlike animals in rich, vibrant colors. Two-page illustrations draw readers' eyes to the main characters that are constantly on the move. Children will appreciate the ingenuity of these companions and how they feel about the results of their labors.–Kathleen Simonetta, Indian Trails Public Library District, Wheeling, IL

From Booklist:
PreS-Gr. 1. Happy Dog and his buddy Jack Cat are suffering in the summer heat. To take their mind off things, they decide to enter a contest to make a walla-pa-doo. What's that? A gizmo made of odds and ends from the junkyard. The duo's first project uses a lot of junk, but even after completing it, they don't know what it is. Then, they decide to kill two birds with one stone. Kids will enjoy seeing the odds and ends come together in a robot with a tuba that sprays water on the hot animals. The story is on the slight side, but the artwork is robust. Grubb uses strong, pure colors that will immediately attract attention, and the story's slightly goofy, if engaging, characters, outlined in black, will make kids laugh. There's an energy in the art that keeps things moving despite a few dips in the plot; it is both happy and sizzling. Ilene Cooper
