Unlike other texts for undergraduate sociological social psychology courses, this text presents the three distinct traditions (or "faces") in sociological social psychology (symbolic interactionism, social structure and personality, and group processes and structures) and emphasizes the different theoretical frameworks within which social psychological analyses are conducted within each research tradition. With this approach, the authors make clear the link between "face" of sociological social psychology, theory, and methodology. Thus, students gain an appreciably better understanding of the field of sociological social psychology; how and why social psychologists trained in sociology ask particular kinds of questions; the types of research they are involved in; and how their findings have been, or can be, applied to contemporary societal patterns and problems. Great writing makes this approach successful and interesting for students, resulting in a richer, more powerful course experience. A website offers instructors high quality support material, written by the authors, which you will appreciate and value."

Review:

"This work combines a fairly exhaustive review of the relevant literature, in-depth descriptions of both classic studies and current research, and applications based in real life. Add to this questions and thought exercises designed to help students learn to apply concepts to their own lives, as well as ways to seek out data to test hypotheses, and this text is the whole package. This text easily surpasses any others I have used for undergraduate Social Psychology classes."

-Tiffiny Guidry, University of Alabama (January, 2013)

"This text has several strengths in comparison to the Rohall book (Pearson,) I have used. It offers more depth, both in the theoretical perspectives and the topics. It potentially gives students a better sense of social psychology as a distinct field by explaining how and why social psychology can answer certain kinds of questions, and not others. And it provides more ways to engage students with the material as they read."

-Leslie Irvine, University of Colorado (January, 2013)

"This book is outstanding. This would be an excellent textbook for a social psychology course with an instructor who is from the SI orientation....it is better than the Charon text, and in my opinion, that is saying a lot!"

-Dominic Little, California State University, Northridge (January, 2013)

"The greater emphasis placed on SOCIOLOGICAL social psychology in this textbook resembles what I see in the book I currently use (Social Psychology: Sociological Perspectives by Rohall, Milkie, and Lucas 2011, Pearson). It is especially similar that both textbooks introduce and organizes materials around the three faces of sociological social psychology: SI, SSP, and GP (or GPS). However, I feel that this textbook does a superior job of providing more in-depth explanation of each perspective by dedicating a chapter for each. For that reason, I would definitely consider adopting this text over the one I am currently using."

-Aya Kimura Ida, California State University, Sacramento (January, 2013)
