Vincent J. Cornell is Asa Griggs Candler Professor ofMiddle East and Islamic Studies and Chair of the Department ofMiddle Eastern and South Asian Studies at Emory University. He isthe author of many books and articles, including Realm of theSaint: Power and Authority in Moroccan Sufism (1998) and TheWay of Abu Madyan (1996), and is the editor is the five-volumeVoices of Islam (2007). His research interests cover theentire spectrum of Islamic thought from the doctrinal and socialhistory of Sufism to theology and political philosophy.
Bruce B. Lawrence is Nancy and Jeffrey Marcus Professorof Islamic Studies Emeritus at Duke University, and AdjunctProfessor at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Vakif University, Turkey. He hastaught at Duke for over 40 years, specializing in Islamicspirituality throughout Afro-Eurasia. His most recent books includeOn Violence: A Reader, co-edited with Aisha Karim (2007),The Qur an: A Biography (2006), and Messages to theWorld: The Statements of Osama Bin Laden (2005). His researchinterests include the comparative study of religious movements;institutional Islam, especially in Asia; Indo-Persian Sufism; andthe religious masks of violence.
