Pharmacology is the science of drugs, their chemical constitution, their biologic action, and their therapeutic application to man. It includes toxicology, which encompasses the harmful effects of all chemicals, whether they are used medicinally or not. The variety of new uses to which drugs are being put, and the increasing exposure of whole populations to potent chemical agents, have created a wider and more intense interest in pharmacology than has ever existed before. The time is long past when anyone can acquire a complete knowledge about all drugs. But many people in diverse fields of endeavor need a foundation, a conceptual framework, upon which may be built the specific knowledge about drugs that is most germane to their own needs. In this book, we have tried to provide a coherent, rational, and scientifically correct amount of the principles underlying every aspect of this science. For physicians, medical students, and others whose aim is to acquire an up-to-date and comprehensive understanding of pharmacology, this book is intended to serve as a basic text, to be supplemented by the systematic textbooks. The fundamental concepts developed here, which ordinarily occupy but a few pages in standard texts, are meant to provide the physician and medical student with the requisite background both for understanding the basis of drug therapy, and for appraising new developments in the field. We hope this book will also be a valuable introduction to pharmacology for all those investigators and students of the natural sciences who, using drugs as research tools, wish to learn the principles of drug action but have no need of a comprehensive catalogue.
