Soft Covers. Condition: NF. No Jacket. Photos, Sketches, Map (illustrator). 1st. Published to mark the centenary of women's sufferage in NZ. this Matamata Historical Society publication covers about 50 women who made a significant contribution to the Matamata area. This progressive rural town is in the rich Waikato heartland. The women whose stories are presented are representative of those who pioneered the settlement of the district and up to contemporary times. However, the entry for 1824 is of Tarore, a 12 year old Maori girl who died in inter-tribal conflict on the Waikato side of the Kaimai range --- her death was to ease the tensions between the tribes through the principle of forgiveness. All entries are arranged alpahabetically, according to surname. 101 pages, b/w photos throughout, few sketches, map. Art card covers (by Anna de Silva) are NF, as is the text block.
