Dinanzi alle congiunzioni e, o, ne', non si suole porre la virgola quando servono a con giungere due nomi o due aggettivi o due verbi, come fece qui appunto il Manzoni, togliendo la virgola, che c'era nella prima edizione dinanzi all' e che serve a congiungere i due aggettivi velata e offuscata; ma quando servono a con giungere una parte d'un periodo con un'altra, si mette, secondo il caso, una virgola o un punto e virgola o due punti, come qui, dopo una gran passione, e più su, dopo la parola trascorsa c' è invece un punto e virgola; e poi, se servono a congiungere un periodo con un altro, si pone anche un punto fermo.
