Dice el benedictino fci]óo en sus cartas eruditas que entre las muchas virtudes ilus tres con que estaba adornadº el Marqués de Santa Cruz, poseía en grado sumo la de la modestia, de modo que no sólo no se le oyó jamás una palabra en que expusiese algún concepto de su mérito, mas nl oyó con agrado alabanza alguna que le tributasen en su presencia, y antes discretamente repelia el elogio procurando persuadir eficazmente que era inmotivado. Esta modestia se descubre a cada punto, en todos sus escritos, lo mismo que su dulzura y condescendencia, que hacen exclamar á Trelles al hablar de su muerte: funesto suceso que no podremos referir sin lágrimas los que conºcimos y tra tamos al Marqués y tubimos experiencia de sus muchos talentos y amabilidad.
