From School Library Journal:
Grade 5 Up-A solid selection for browsing, as well as a great source for searching a subject rarely found in so accessible a format. The book is organized into short chapters, each of which is a descriptive or biographical sketch of several pages, including black-and-white photographs. The diversity of topics is amazing, ranging from Yung Wing, who wrote the first English language autobiography by an Asian American, to Olympic diver Greg Louganis, who is of Samoan ancestry. There are also entries for places, such as internment camps and Chinese laundries. The nearly 100 stories of Asian-Pacific Americans will surprise readers with interesting information and send them out for further reading on myriad fascinating topics. As Sinnott suggests in her dedication, Extraordinary Asian Pacific Americans is about the search for Gold Mountain and the many contributions that these immigrants made when they came here. The numerous good-quality black-and-white photographs, the beautiful page design with fine, detailed, oriental motifs, and the extensive index and bibliography add to the appeal and usefulness of this valuable anthology.

From Booklist:
Gr. 4-6. More than an extensive collection of minibiographies of Asian Pacific Americans, this title is also a history of Asian Pacific immigration to the U.S., including information on immigration laws and naturalization quotas, essays on Chinese railroad workers and Japanese detention camps, and more. Biographical sketches, which feature such notables as Seiji Ozawa, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Kristi Yamaguchi, run two or three pages and are accompanied by a photograph. The design is quite nice (although it still has the look of a social-studies textbook), with black-and-white photographs and border motifs adapted from traditional artwork. Accessible and interesting for the browser or casual reader, the book also includes notes and a list of further reading that will make it valuable to the report writer. Janice Del Negro
