From Coney Island to the Heights, from the 1850s to the present, here is the essence of Brooklyn. This diverse anthology includes the work of such notables as Truman Capote, Cristina Garcia, Spike Lee, William Styron, Walt Whitman, and Thomas Wolfe. "Testaments to the mythic place Brooklyn was, and in many ways continues to be."--New YorkDaily News.

From the Back Cover:
"Lively, affectionate, moving pieces by the natives and transplants who have made Brooklyn one of America's great literary landscapes." -- Tallahassee Democrat

"Intelligently conceived and intelligently executed ... a portrait of the borough as it might have been edited for William Shawn's New Yorker." -- Boston Sunday Globe

"There's plenty of gems ... one of the best is Capote's evocation of the Heights and those first sentences: 'I live in Brooklyn. By choice.' " -- New York

"Testaments to the mythic place Brooklyn was, and in many ways continues to be."--New YorkDaily News.

From Library Journal:
"Dere's no guy livin' dat knows Brooklyn t'roo and t'roo," wrote North Carolinian Thomas Wolfe, "because it'd take a guy a lifetime just to find his way aroun'." These are among the final words in this alphabetical anthology of work from the indigenous literati and sojourning scribes who graced Brooklyn until roughly the middle of this century. Some of the best pieces are authored not by dead poets but rather by the likes of Spike Lee, whose recollection of filming Do the Right Thing in Bedford-Stuyvesant follows an ambivalent evocation of Irish American adolescence by native journalist Pete Hamill. While these essays are strongly about place and people, some of the short stories appear only weakly connected to Brooklyn. Although this book makes a decent introduction to American, not just Brooklyn, literature, only New York-area public and school libraries will likely consider it.
