Wykeham Books
(LONDON, United Kingdom)

Book Description Cloth, large 4to, 31 cm, xxiv, 270 pp, numerous ills (some colour). From the blurb - " This is the first book in 70 years to examine the enormous variety and richness of Parisian manuscript painting in the middle half of the 13th century. Robert Branner is concerned with the identification and stylistic histories of the many ateliers of manuscript illumination active in Paris this time, when production of luxury volumes by professional scribes and artists soared in response to demands of a large and growing patronge that included the king and court, wealthy burghers, and well-to-do students who flocked to the new University. A new edition of the Bible, the basis of medieval theological studies, had recently been issued by a group of professors and publishers. This version, essentially like the modern Vulgate, quickly became popular and was reproduced in hundreds of copies, many illuminated. Paris thus soon came to known as the "capital" of European manuscript painting, exerting marked influence on workshops all over the Continent and in England. Branner's method is to identify a Parisian atelier by its work in manuscripts made for liturgical or cult use by a local institution - or, in some cases, by the early intensive production of new Bibles and then, by stylistic comparison, to assign to that atelier other manuscripts whose provenance would otherwise be uncertain or unknown. This method gives an outline of the histories of paintshops, showing how they developed and at times collaborated with one another. A working-list of manuscripts grouped by atelier is included in an appendix and critical specimens ofl each shop style are reproduced in 428 illustrations, 26 of them in color. The appendixes include listings of the Parisian order of Bible books and prologues, bookmakers and booksellers in Paris, the painters in several large groups of manuscripts, and various items such as Bible subjects, materials for dating; and the sequence of books in glossed Bibles." A trifle agetoned, otherwise Very Good in a somewhat faded dustwrapper. Seller Inventory # ABE-58116
