Grade 3-6 Summer is approaching, and Lucy Heller has to cope with end-of-school pressures while she dreams up grandiose schemes. Lucy's biggest project is the renovation of the family boathouse on the lake. Her grandpa, in a nursing home, has described the wonderful dances her grandmother had there, and she can just see it restored for a glorious party. A new bus for the school her learning-disabled brother Sam attends is the cause she finds for community help to make her dream come true. Believable characters abound, including a sympathetic male teacher, a father allergic to cats, a working mother and a forgetful grandfatherbut the number of people and events seem excessive for one small book. Lucy is almost too independent and capable, taking a boat out alone to fish and waterskiing successfully her first time up. The "operation" she and her friends perform on Sam, with grandpa's old medical equipment, to make the alphabet concrete to him verges on the dangerous. Still, simple declarative sentences and short episodic chapters keep the action going, and humor pervades this juvenile equivalent of the light summer novel.
