From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-9-- The measurement of almost everything imaginable is explained in this clear and concise book. Early chapters deal with standard units of measurement and how they came about. Later chapters explain how measurement is used in industries such as construction, apparel, cartography, surveying, printing, movies, and television. Other sections deal with measurement in sciences such as meteorology and physics. As Bendick says, "Until something can be measured in some way, it cannot be completely understood." Thus, in the course of explaining measurement, she gives brief, yet understandable, explanations of a number of other complicated subjects as well. The historical development of different means of measurement is also adequately explained. A few black-and-white photographs are inserted into the text, along with a few charts. These are sometimes helpful, but there are not enough. The index is excellent, and a five-page table of weights and measures should prove useful and help make this a great resource for reports. In this revision of the 1960 edition, extensive changes have been made in the book's organization, new information has been added, and many sections have been thoroughly updated. --Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Pub .
