Gr 6 Up-Dolan addresses teens who are compulsive gamblers, children of compulsive gamblers, and immediate family members of these individuals. Despite some faults, the book fills a void and offers solid general advice. ``Gambling through the Ages'' is a fascinating historical survey that traces the practice to Biblical times and throughout most cultures. The U.S. has had alternating periods of ``gambling fever'' and severe restrictions. The author sees the activity as a source of pleasure and/ or an escape that can develop into a ``psychic dependence.'' He presents a profile of individuals at risk and outlines the phases of an addictive pattern. The chapter that deals with its impact on the family contains valuable material, but its presentation is not effective. Stereotypes of how different family members ``tend'' to react are presented and the discussion is divided into ``phases''-a device that becomes irritating. The Gamblers Anonymous program and the work of its affiliates, Gam-Anon and Gam-A-Teen, are described in detail. Deborah Crisfield's Gambling (Crestwood, 1991) covers some of the same ground, but it is younger in style, language, and format.- Libby K. White, Schenectady County Public Library, NY
