Kindergarten-Grade 3-Each of these two small picture books contains six tales from the Old Testament. The text is on the left-hand page, facing an illustration on the right that includes a short quote from the appropriate book of the Bible. That page folds out to reveal a more detailed panorama of the same story. This format makes the Old Testament more accessible to younger children. Unfortunately, the pedestrian writing style and the shortening of the stories rob youngsters of the rich language of the Bible. The brightly colored cartoon illustrations are full of lively action, bringing out the folk quality of these traditional tales. A more inclusive, better written book is The Doubleday Illustrated Children's Bible (1983), retold by Sandol Stoddard. It is for slightly older children and contains many longer stories from the Old and New Testaments.
