Latch Key Kids-- Sarasota, Florida in 1982 is a dreary, seaside resort town from which the only escape seems to be accepting a corrupt existence. Buzz, a 17-year-old punk, can see no honest future ahead of him. “The anticipation of things is always better than what really happens,” he notes. He and his sister Sissy, along with their two friends Albino and Dave, spend their evenings working minimum-wage jobs at a fastfood outlet. They suffer going to high school with junior fascists. They wear second-hand clothes. They live in a second-hand world.

“I have a need for certain people to hate me. If those people don’t hate me, I feel like a failure,” Buzz says. “It’s sort of an affirmation of what I am not.” It’s a low life of fury and frustration, cheap alcohol, illicit drugs, and punk rock music.

Small Town Punk is a brutally funny romp through Reagan’s “Morning in America”.

About the Author:

John L. Sheppard was born in Ohio, grew up in Florida, and served in the U.S. Army in Germany. Now he lives next door to a graveyard in Chicago. If you liked this book, you should blow more brass on Midnight in Monaco and Carl versus the Men from Mars.

From Booklist:

It's the early 1980s in Sarasota, Florida, and 17-year-old Buzz, his 15-year-old sister, Sissy, and their fellow punk friends Dave and Albino are "gagging on life, trying to wash it away with cheap beer." When they're not getting wasted, they're hating school, working part-time jobs at Pizza Hut, listening to "alternative" music, popping zits, making fun of authority, and, well, being teenagers. Many of the situations in Sheppard's loosely linked, semiautobiographical stories are familiar, but they feel authentic and lived-in. And though the episodes are uneven in quality, their author has clearly been there and done that, managing to recapture the experience for his readers with an easy affection for his characters and a sense of natural, unforced humor. Sheppard is at his best, though, when he's writing about the relationship between hapless Buzz and his she-who-must-be-obeyed little sister. Most readers would welcome the opportunity to hear more about them. Michael Cart
