From the front flap of this 248 page book: "This history of civil rights describes 250 years of prejudice and segregation in York, Pennsylvania. It also depicts the many people and organizations here who struggled for tolerance and equality, often at great personal risk. The book is made of hundreds of little, and not-so-little, stories which cummulatively show a pattern. The story starts with the expulsion of the Indians, and goes on to describe slavery, attempts to obtain Negro equality, the fight for institutional desegregation, the black militant movement, the race riots of 1968 and 1969, the outbreak of hate crimes of the last decade, the divide between city and county, and the current debate on whether integration is still a goal worth pursuing. It deals with the civil rights of African Americans, Hispanics, Gays and Lesbians, women, people with disabilities, immigrants, and Jews. It addresses the creation and activity of the York City Human Relations Commission in its work to enforce antidiscrimination laws in housing, employment, education, and public accommodations. It looks at the police, local government, politics, the church, the media, nonprofit organizations, and business. It profiles civil rights leaders and everyday people of York, as well as the prejudiced and bigoted. This book is important for the citizens of York in helping to understand their civil rights history and take steps to do better; it is a useful tool for human relations workers and civil rights organizations to use in their education and out reach efforts; it is an opportunity for all people to rededicate themselves to achieving a society without prejudice; it makes a valuable and unique contribution to the field of civil rights history; and it offers a keen insight into the dynamics of a complex community in a plain speaking and readable text accompanied by many vivid and illustrative photos.
