Einstein met Freud in Berlin in 1927; they had a friendly exchange of ideas. In 1937, as part of the League of Nations, Einstein asked Freud to communicate on the cause and cure of war-Freud's letter was later entitled: "Why war." Over 80 years ago, Freud revealed that human beings were bound by two primal drives (the life and death instincts); "human nature" was the result of those two "opposing" forces ; the more powerful regressive-death instinct-thwarted individuals (and humanity) from ever reaching their goals-"it was the ultimate cause of all the conflicts in the mind." Freud died, unable to resolve this pessimistic problem--resulting in this "truth" being buried in the literature: until now! One aspect of this book will be to provide the "groundwork" leading to its sequel: "Why War": a complex subject extending into the 21st century. At first glance, it is difficult enough to grapple with the concept of the "soul"; yet to conceive of the soul containing the impulses that initiate wars. Therefore, the implication must be that the soul is the executor of various behaviors; this is not a new idea. Plato (427-347 BC): The soul contained the intellect and animated the body; it had reason, emotion and appetite (money, sex). Reason needed to "rule" over emotion and appetite for harmony, otherwise tyranny could be the outcome. St.Thomas Aquinas and later Rene Descartes described the soul's control over human behavior. Modern psychologists such, Dr. Carl Jung, continued the search in his book: "Modern man in search of the soul." Nevertheless, to this day, the soul remains a mystery; there is no working knowledge of the nature or functions of the soul. The story: As the nature of the soul is revealed, the men also learn that creation is in process-not finished. Freud realizes that the two instincts are in the soul-- not the brain: one resisting the completion of the soul, the other facilitating it. Einstein then considers that these same two "forces" in the soul might be reflected in all things- i.e., the atom and the cosmos; therefore, the "soul" needs to complete its development, and the universe may be representing the same process. Breaking their Heavenly amnesia, they remember their communications on war, and wonder if the lessons are preparing them to re-address the issue during their next lifetime.
