Yvonne Daley had worked as an award-winning journalist and traveled widely, but had never lived in an inner-city neighborhood before moving to San Francisco in 2003. In Octavia Boulevard, we follow Daley as she chronicles the lives of her fellow apartment dwellers and the homeless people living in her neighborhood, the characters who hold forth at the corner coffee shop, and the events that contribute to San Francisco s reputation as the nations most enterprising and original city. Her memoir is simultaneously funny and heartbreaking as she explores the impact of the counterculture and deinstitutionalization, the conflict between progressive politics and capitalism, and her own response to people sleeping outside her door while the city spends tens of thousands to install mature palm trees and kaleidoscopes on the corner. Tag along and meet a host of quintessential San Franciscans, a Wisdom Man, a Silent Guy, a mayoral candidate running on the naked ticket, a quirky landlord, and a wise 80-year-old named Mae West.

Review:
Yvonne Daleys Octavia Boulevard, for my money, ranks right up there with Angelas Ashes and Eat, Pray, Love. From Chinatown to Haight-Ashbury, Daley brings San Francisco to life in literature as no one has since the Beat Poets. Best of all is the marvelous apartment house on Octavia Boulevard, the microcosm and small village where Daley lived for several years with a host of unforgettable characters, all of whom poured out their stories to this splendid writer. --Howard Frank Mosher, author of Disappearances, Walking to Gatlinburg & North Country

Yvonne Daley is the only writer in America who could have drawn such an illuminating portrait of San Francisco in the Awful Age of Bush. She is the sharpeyed and patient listener whos caught the soul of this remarkable city and its most resilient citizens. What Daley tracks in these pages is how and why America began dreaming of Obama long before it knew who he was. Octavia Boulevard may break your heart, but it also offers some street-smart hope. --David Huddle, The Story of a Million Years, La Tour Dreams of the Wolf Girl, Tenorman, Glory Days

Octavia Boulevard is a microcosm of San Francisco, San Francisco a paradigm of cities. Octavia Boulevard offers a reader experience of the plenitude and disorder that is humanity s creation (ex nihilo, in its own image) of the urban planet with its joyous and disturbing interpenetration of pains and pleasures trying to fill the endlessly unfulfillable gut of human hungers. --Tom Smith, Spending the Light, Jacks Beans: A Five-Year Diary, A Very Good Boy
