“Eeek! A mouse! I cannot have a mouse in the house!” cries Nana Quimby, sending the family on a frantic adventure as they try to rid themselves of first the mouse, then its troublesome successors. From an owl to an elephant, the Quimby family pets devour shoes, steal lunch, quarrel with skunks, uproot trees, and soon convince Nana that there are worse things to have than a mouse in the house.

Review:
The Quimby family is not too particular about neatness or propriety. When they move into a ramshackle house, Sister promptly begins collecting flies in the attic, Mother appreciates how the cobwebs hide dirt, and Father takes a nap on the floor. However, a mouse in the house is another story altogether, at least as far as Nana Quimby is concerned. "Eeek--a mouse!" she cries. "I cannot have a mouse in the house." And so, in the vein of "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," this silly family proceeds to adopt pets to address the issue of the mouse--and the subsequent issues of each troublesome solution. First it’s an owl. The mouse runs away to a cheese factory and Father gives the owl a bowl of onions for a job well done. End of story? Not by a long shot! The owl hoots and bumps into things, generally menacing Nana Quimby. The solution? A dog. But the dog quarrels with a skunk. What to do? Adopt an alligator, of course. And so it goes, until Nana Quimby finally finds the perfect solution, which will have readers of all ages in stitches.

John and Ann Hassett, co-authors of Cat Up a Tree (starring none other than Nana Quimby) and The Three Silly Girls Grubb, among others, are masters of nonsense in word and art. (Ages 4 and older) --Emilie Coulter
