One August day in the year 1900 Luke Ellwood looked down at his day-old brother. His face is red and his nose is a beak. He's like a little turkey. That was how Septimus Dudley Ellwood, the ninth child of Dr. Elwood and Ma Ellwood, came to be called Little Turkey. Before long Little Turkey had been shortened to L. T., and by the time he was five they were calling him Eltee. Eltee and the ten other Ellwoods lived on a farm way up in the Sierra Nevadas, many miles from the one-room school or the post office. Eltee had a wonderful time in the wilderness, catching wild animals for pets, riding the flume, teasing the teacher at school, and exploring the lumber camps with Luke. Luke worked in a lumber camp, and that was what Eltee wanted to do when he grew up. Eltee's only worry was his terrible, terrible shyness. There was an awful dark brown pain that came whenever he encountered a strange person. Both the story and illustrations have a wonderful mixture of realism, naturalness, and humor.
