Review:
Meg Finn has led a miserable life. First, her mum died, saddling her with a useless, nasty stepfather. Then, angry and alone, Meg found herself committing acts of petty crime with dim-witted hood Belch Brennan. Finally, just as she was about to go straight to honor her sainted mum s memory, Belch went and got them both killed as they attempted to rob crabby old Lowrie McCall. And if that wasn t bad enough, now St. Peter and Beelzebub can t decide which way Meg is supposed to go. She is one in a million: a soul perfectly balanced between good and evil. Now Meg s got to go back and somehow tip the scales UP--the further, the better! To earn her wings, Meg s been assigned to help the last person she tried to hurt (Lowrie McCall) who has a wish list of wrong choices that he wants to make right. But Beelzebub can t stand the thought of a bad soul going good. So he sends back the soul of powerfully stupid Belch, (who went straight down without stopping) to muck things up for Meg and Lowrie. But Meg s got smarts on her side and more than just a few tricks up her insubstantial sleeve...

At times, best-selling author Eoin Colfer s Wish List reads like a head-on collision between Dawson s Creek and Touched by an Angel. But rabid fans of the Artemis Fowl books won t notice or care. This black comedy is sure to make every fantasy-reading teen s Wish List. --Jennifer Hubert

From the Inside Flap:
From the author of the bestselling Artemis Fowl series comes a heartwarming tale of a young girl who is given a gift--the chance to right her wrongs, and discover the true meaning of life.

Meg Finn is in trouble. Unearthly trouble. Cast out of her own home by her stepfather after her mom's death, Meg is a wanderer, a troublemaker. But after her latest stunt, finding a place to sleep is the lead of her worries. Belch, Meg's partner in crime, has gotten her involved in an attempt to rob an old man's apartment, and things have gone horribly wrong. After an accidental explosion, both Meg and Belch's spirits are flung into limbo, and a race begins between the demonic and the divine to win Meg's soul.

Meg's not such a bad kid, but she hasn't exactly been an angel either, so the tally for her "good" and "evil" deeds are dead even. Her only chance for tipping the scales to salvation is by going back to earth and doing some good--specifically, helping Lowrie, the old guy she tried to rob. He's got a wish list of life regrets to be set right and only so much time to do it. But even if Meg can persuade Lowrie to get mixed up with her, she's going to have to deal with an even scarier, undead Belch who's definitely on the side of the Devil now.

With laughs and chills, THE WISH LIST is an exciting tale of life, death, and unexpected hereafter.

Eoin Colfer's The Wish List is a bitter yet rip-roaringly funny tale of two wayward teenagers on the road to hell--literally. The story opens with Meg Finn and Belch Brennan, two bad kids on the block, breaking in to a pensioner's flat. At the very last minute Meg reneges on the deal and tries to break for freedom, leaving the aged Lowrie McCall screaming with the pain inflicted by Belch's blood-thirsty hound. Backed into a corner by Belch and a shotgun, Meg pleads with Belch to call an ambulance and save the old man's life. Instead he pulls the trigger and in a split second of evil and madness the bullet hits a gas tank and knocks Meg's soul out of her skin, catapulting her spirit along a vast tunnel on the way to some particularly shiny, pearly gates. Meanwhile, Beelzebub is fretting. His boss was expecting two souls, and although Belch (in his new incarnation as a dribbling, growling, red-eyed dog-boy) took the correct turn in the tunnel, he's rather miffed that Meg found her way to the beautifully buffed Pearlies and an interview with Saint Peter and his rather complicated points system. So, the archangel and the demon do a deal, and Meg is given a chance to redeem herself. If she fails on her mission to help Lowrie McCall work his way through his Wish List before he dies, then she too will be heading south to join the boy-band members, the mime artists, Belch and the world's computer boffins in fiery damnation. The Wish List was first published in Ireland in 2000, bringing with it much critical acclaim. In 2002, following the enormous and well-deserved success of the Artemis Fowl books, Eoin Colfer's publishers decided to let the rest of the world sneak a peak. And about time too. Hopelessly hopeful, immorally moral, rattling with the pain of its anti-heroine as she faces her own demons, and rib-crackingly, laugh-out-loud funny, The Wish List strikes an almost perfect balance between good, old-fashioned scruples and thoroughly modern irreverence in what is ultimately, and most importantly, a darn good read. Not for the faint-hearted, and certainly not for those who can't take a border-line sick joke every now and then, The Wish List is a divinely devilish tale for anyone who enjoys a bucket full of grit and truck load of wisecracks with their reading material. Age 10 and over, recommended particularly for older readers. Ref BBB 1. Seller Inventory # 031319
