Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Orville and Willa Wright and their children, Alexander, Graham, and Belle--are fixer-uppers and inventors. In The Day-Off Machine , Graham wants to play in the snow but since Dad is working, the others work on their projects, too. Graham decides that he must invent something that will give them all a day off. A second episode describes the snowpeople Graham builds--one for each member of the family. The Great Leaf Blast-Off has two inventions backfiring. The leaf-blowing machine blows the leaves on the tree as well as those on the ground, but the second invention, a leaf eater, comes to the rescue, if only temporarily. Alexander and Graham finally resign themselves to "rake, rake, rake." In the next episode Belle makes her own more successful invention. Himmelman's illustrations are not outstanding, but the softly colored pictures do show the beavers as a cohesive, loving family unit and help readers visualize all the crazy contraptions.
