Mr. Lutz, Mrs. Mankowitz, and her granddaughter liberate a wonderful live salmon from a Coney Island fish market and return it to the sea

From Booklist:
Ages 5-8. The unusual trio at the heart of this "feel good" picture book is composed of three residents of a Coney Island tenement--elderly, white-haired Mrs. Mankowitz, her cherry-cheeked granddaughter Sarah, and their friend, wrinkled Mr. Lutz. When Mrs. M. asks Mr. L. whether he misses "magic" in his life, Lutz mistakenly thinks she's talking about the kind in which rabbits pop out of hats. But a few days later, when he finds a beautiful salmon miraculously alive in a box of ice in Mr. Finback's fish store, he understands what his friend was really talking about. It isn't long before the threesome is speeding toward the beach, with the pilfered, flopping fish in hand. What happens next speaks to the love of fantasy in us all. The fluid watercolors capture the drabness of the tenements, but the bright, shimmery highlights Poppel uses add a radiance to the pictures that makes everything seem almost surreal. Karlins' subtle use of the Jewish idiom helps ground the story and adds texture to the characters, whose triumphant dance under the strange, new salmon moon is filled with a splendidly contagious joy.
