The author has constrained himself in attempting in this book to adjust the scientific knowledge of the general field of the mechanical behavior of materials into a systematic whole. Although the behavior is invariably quite complicated, the principles that control it are, as often in nature, likely to be simple and it is one of his objectives ion writing this text to find a key to the resolution of what frequently appear as contradictory propositions. He has attempted in this book to provide an elementary base from which those studying any one aspect of materials might be encouraged to take a broad view and to begin the inevitable bridging of the gap between the microscopic description of the fracture process in materials. The accounts given in this text differ substantially, almost completely, from those to be found in his earlier volume 'The Strength, Fracture and Fatigue of Materials' issued by the present publisher, which was conceived in the same spirit as the present book. The two texts are complimentary and readers will benefit by consulting them together. Those sections that, to university students, seem at first difficult to understand could well be omitted, without distracting seriously from the usefulness of other parts of the book. Yet qa good grasp of the elements of mathematics, physics, dynamics and chemistry should, nevertheless, allow an understanding of the descriptions given here. A text of this sort should find favour not only in schools of mechanical engineering but also those, in universities, of metallurgy. This book is intended as a basis of lectures to university students of mechanical engineering, and for this reason elementary notions like those of stress and strain, in the mechanics of solids, and like the phase rule in engineering materials are not discussed.
