From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-10-- Using brief, realistic case studies to introduce numerous consumer problems, Schmitt covers a range of topics that will be of interest to the middle schoolers who meet at the mall. Practical wisdom regarding comparison shopping, label information, unit pricing, and product safety will provide clear consumer guidance. For home catalog shoppers, "Naderesque" advice is offered about the value of reading the small print, the warranty, and the exchange policy. For those who might be easily duped, there's a section on scams, truth-in-advertising, chain letters, and pre-paid "bargains." In case adolescent spenders still have product problems, Schmitt has included a short course on effective complaining and letter writing. Alhough similar in content to Kathy Kyte's The Kids' Complete Guide to Money (Knopf, 1984), Smart Spending is addressed to slightly older readers and offers some fresh ideas. Whether buying acne remedies or counterfeit brand-name jeans, young consumers will profit by spending some time with this direct and thorough guide. --Miriam Hansen, formerly at Eau Claire Schools, Wis.
