PreS?As in many of her earlier titles, Tafuri places her characteristic full-sized animals and large boldface type across big, broad pages. This time, however, the colored-pencil and watercolor artwork has a decidely pastel palette and the story is as flat as the pictures. Cristina celebrates her fourth birthday with a party in the barn. The guests, especially the girls, arrive in pale party clothes reminiscent of a bygone era, and are grossly overdressed. When they dance, their bodies show little movement, and their faces have stilted expressions. The climax?a balloon pops, the animals scatter, the goat finds the present?exhibits hardly more tension or action.
