Text: English, Swedish (translation)
Grade 1 Up Willie journeys through unknown territories marked by larger-than-life landmarks. Along the way, he meets a variety of distinctive people and animals from whom he gets odd tokens, including a shoe, a spool of thread, and a pencil sharpener shaped like a globe. He acquires ten tokens in all, then gives all but one away as he returns home. The antic illustrations are in full color, and each double-paged spread is packed with objects in number groups correlating to the number of Willie's stops on his way (e.g., the duke whom he visits at his ninth stop has nine geese, nine apple cores, etc.). These pages capture the eye, but there's little in the text to support the extended cumulation. Not quite counting book nor story book, this adventure is illustrated too densely for children learning numbers, but the story line is too sparse for older ones. For a sophisticated cumulative number book that works, try Charlip's Thirteen (Parent's Magazine Pr, 1975; o.p.). Carolyn Noah, Worcester Public Lib . , Mass.
