Acclaimed for his picture books that speak directly to young naturalists, Jim Arnosky enjoys researching different ecological areas with his wife, Deanna. His many awards and honors include the Washington Post—Children's Book Guild Award for overall contribution to nonfiction for children and the Eva L. Gordon Award for outstanding children's science literature. He has also written and illustrated numerous ALA Notable Books and Outstanding Science Books. Home base for the Arnoskys is a two-hundred-year-old farmhouse in northern Vermont. Their daughters and their families live nearby.

Grade 6-8 Another lovely book in which the artist-naturalist shares his pleasure in sketching the world around him. Two typefaces define the dual purpose of the booklarge print paragraphs describe Arnosky's personal experience in sketching trees, brooks, emerging spring flowers, and woodland animals; small print notes give general suggestions on drawing technique. Like his earlier Drawing from Nature (Lothrop, 1982) , the book successfully conveys the aesthetic pleasure of sketching and demonstrates how important a focused awareness of the observed world is to the artist. However, this book is less successful in describing the techniques which translate observation into a sketch. The drawing sugestions tend to be vague and subjective, so while this book can give readers a great deal of pleasure, it is not as successful at teaching drawing technique. Unlike other authors who teach simple tricks and patterns in drawing, Arnosky focuses on awareness and the connections that artists make to the objects they draw. He assumes a level of knowledge and experience beyond the scope of many young readers. While this limits the book's usefulness as a drawing book, the combination of text and beautifully executed drawings could inspire young readers, artists or not, to go into the spring woods and really look at the world around them.
