Ian Campbell, 16, goes from his home in Illinois to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, to claim an inheritance from a grandmother he never knew. He arrives to find his grandmother's house inhabited by distant cousin Estelle, who believes that she has a claim to the property, and her daughter, Morgan. As Ian attempts to piece together his grandmother's past, he learns that Estelle was responsible for the family's continuing estrangements and that his own life may be in danger. This is a solid, suspenseful mystery that moves along swiftly from start to finish. The setting is beautifully and--for the most part--accurately portrayed. The grandmother's cottage, however, is described in several passages as being surrounded by rhododendron, a plant native to the mountains of North Carolina but not its seacoast. Otherwise, the descriptions provide an appealing and sometimes foreboding backdrop for the puzzling events; historical information is incorporated nicely into the plot line. Estelle is a properly sinister villain and Ian a thoroughly likable protagonist. If all the loose strings are tied up too quickly and neatly at the end, readers will hardly notice or care.
