The title of this book is a bit misleading if one expects to discover how American political parties use speech as a political device. The content is clearly from the perspective of a rhetorician. The author, a professor of speech communications and a former presidential speech writer, is concerned about the sophistry found in American politics and sets out to place it in its proper historical context. Expression as a broad form of speech and one of the rights of an American citizen is found in the First Amendment to the Constitution. The background to the inclusion of speech as a right in the Bin of Rights is presented by Smith before he examines how, under the pressure of perceived internal threats, this right has been curtailed by the government and politicians. The major contribution provided is the detailed examination of how various forms of speech are used in a political campaign to manipulate public opinion to support any political position. Smith also points out styles of rhetorical persuasion used in political debates as a means to better appreciate and to analyze political statements. This is a good contribution to our understanding of how the media is used by contemporary politicians to advance a statement on a public issue. -- From Independent Publisher
