One of the most surprising miracles I've experienced as a result of working through this book has been an awakening to what I can only describe as the simple joy of childhood. After decades of living in survival mode, I was completely taken off guard when I started experiencing things like studying -- really studying -- a caterpillar. Or stopping mid-walk to mingle with the family of ducks in our neighborhood pond. Or collecting sea shells for hours at a time with my daughter. I am a licensed mental health counselor in Washington State. This is by far one of the best books I have read in my field. Dozens of my clients have also read the book and have stated that it really helped them to understand shame and how it has negatively impacted their lives. It also explains defense mechanisms very well. So many of us live our lives not loving ourselves. This book brings home the message that God loves us, therefore we can love our self no matter what we have done. Many have read and re-read it. I have personally known the Basel's for 22 years. They live the stuff they are teaching and they have impacted my life in many ways but if I had to pick one main way they have changed my life, its understanding that the Father loves me. So I was not surprised when I saw the title of their book! May God bless the Basels for their faithfulness to Christ and their love for others. When I read this book, I made five pages of notes on what impacted me. The whole section on mother wounds took me from being a reading team member into my own issues and I forgot I was supposed to be reading for feedback purposes. I will tell others Buy this book!! It will bring you the freedom you have been looking for your whole life. I would tell them that it is radical in that it teaches how God feels about us, rather than how we THINK he feels about us. It shares the truth that has been forgotten over time and in teaching. Loving yourself is not selfish! I think anyone who is seeking to be whole would benefit from this book. Even the lost. However, I think the target market would be Christians who have been in the church for years and still feel something is not working. Those who have brokenness in their lives and cannot find an explanation. Those with genuine hearts who have been striving to meet God s approval and earn his love. Anyone who sees himself or herself as less than. I love this book! I have walked this road with Jerry and Denise, and taken what I learned to continue my journey in my own life. It truly set me free to know I mean really know that God loves me and that I am worth loving. I have been accused of being stubborn I prefer tenacious and those words describe my hard headedness. Jerry and Denise Basel, who have been married for over 40 years, have co-directed The Father's Heart Intensive Christian Counseling Ministry for twenty years, counseling individuals and couples worldwide. Both completed Master's Degrees in Christian Counseling at Regent University in Virginia Beach, with Jerry completing an additional Master's Degree in Theology, and Denise, a Post Master's Certificate with a Biblical Counseling emphasis. The Basels also hold Master's Degrees in Higher Education from Michigan State University. Prior to committing their lives to pastoral ministry, they both held teaching and administrative positions at the college and university level for almost 20 years.
