Grade 9 Up-Princess Atlanta of Eddala, who has been brought up listening to the glorious tales of her warrior-queen namesake, kicks off this fantasy adventure by running away from a forced marriage. She decides to journey toward the mythic Distant Mountains, and along the way takes up with the mysterious Gypsy Orrin, his suave cousin Gennady, and an ever-shifting motley crew of colorful characters, all of whom are bracing for an impending war that threatens to destroy everything Atlanta holds dear. Dobson has fashioned a fully realized fictional world that is rich in history and lore. In Atlanta, she has created a strong and engaging heroine to whom many girls should be able to relate. Unfortunately, the book suffers from uneven pacing; some sections drag while others seem neglected in the rush to the story's conclusion, which is ultimately anticlimactic. Overall, this would be a suitable selection for libraries with avid fantasy readers, but it may not appeal to a wide audience.
