Part history, some sociology, and considerable anthropology, this pleasant, rambling account emerges from the daily life of three generations of a Muslim family in Borli Panchatan, a small village south of Bombay. The author adroitly interweaves her personal impressions (gained during visits in 1973 and 1983-84) with the villagers' oral history to provide a series of glimpses of Borli's development through the 20th century. The weather, economy, religion, marriage, etc., form the subject matter of an evocative narrative.
