Translated from the French by Christine Cornell, with a forward by Jean-Paul Faivre, Docteur es Lettres. Nicolas Baudin (1754-1803) was a French explorer, cartographer, naturalist and hydrographer. Between 1801 and 1803, under instruction by Napoleon Bonaparte, he led a voyage of discovery that contributed significantly to knowledge of much of Australia, collecting more than 100,000 specimens of flora and fauna.
