A paeodophile is on the loose in Casterford and a group of vigilantes is on the rampage causing trouble for DI Nick Holroyd and his team. Then a teenage youth is killed and the police are plunged into a murder inquiry. Meanwhile, some letters by Thomas Hardy are discovered, which refer to an unknown novel by him. As the hunt for this manuscript threads through the story another death causes the police to think that the events may all be connected.

About the Author:
Ann Quinton is married and lives with her husband and collection of Siamese cats in a small Suffolk village near the coast. She has three children, two sons and a daughter. Before leaving to start her family, she worked in the library service, both in a county library and in a scientific research station, where she met her husband. As well as being a writer Ann is also a well-known local artist, working mainly in pastels, exhibiting regularly. She is also very interested in music, both as a listener and performer, and has worked professionally as a pianist and accompanist.
From Booklist:
During a Dorset autumn, Detective Inspector Nick Holroyd and his colleagues are trying to stop mob violence against paroled sex offenders. Then Holroyd's fiancee discovers some stolen Thomas Hardy letters, and the son of a family friend abruptly disappears. This latest Holroyd mystery is part procedural, part cozy. The book's first third is slow paced, but readers will have plenty to keep them interested, thanks to the tough-to-solve mystery, the lively portrait of village life, and the nicely developed characters. Along the way, Quinton offers attractive descriptions of English pubs and intriguing information about medical procedures, adoption, rare manuscripts, and community theater. Recommend this to fans of English procedurals set in villages and suburbs, such as Betty Rowlands' Sukey Reynolds series or J. M. Gregson's Hook and Lambert series. John Rowen
