From Booklist:
Brandy-loving Inspector Enrique Alvarez, Cuerpo General de Policia of Mallorca, returns in fine form in this consistently engaging and entertaining series. Those familiar with the inspector's earlier exploits will find all the usual themes here, especially the beauty of the Mediterranean island and the differences in attitudes and habits between the shrewd natives and the arrogant English expatriates. Among the latter is the odious Lady Gerrard, who makes life most unpleasant for the poor inspector when he attempts to investigate the murder of Lady Gerrard's ex-servant, Dora Coates. The evidence points toward Lady Gerrard's brother-in-law, but before the inspector can marshal proof, her ladyship's complaints get him suspended from the case and possibly dismissed from the force, courtesy of the equally odious Superior Chief Salas. But at least Alvarez's moody cousin, Dolores, is on hand to serve the inspector her exquisite meals, albeit accompanied with acid comments about the worthlessness of all men. Like Dolores' dishes, this is a series to savor for its distinctive flavor and the subtlety of its texture. Stuart Miller
