An Ensign Early novel of the Anglo-Zulu War - South Africa, May 1879. Ensign Early of the 24th Foot division is only just warming to his role as the Provost-Marshal in the British army encampment at Landman’s Drift when an unidentified body turns up, and forces him to embrace his new position of power in order to solve the mystery. Early quickly discovers that the body is that of a lieutenant, who met his end during an illegal duel. His death should be treated as manslaughter... or worse, but with the gentleman’s code still strong among the offices, how will Early catch the killer before the Zulu’s attack?

About the Author:
Garry Kilworth has written many novels for children -- and adults -- mostly on science-fiction, fantasy and historical themes -- including The Drowners which was commended for the Carnegie Medal in 1992.
Review:
No gentleman wants to be a military policeman, but Ensign Sebastian Early is finding his posting as provost-marshal in South Africa during the Zulu wars a worthy endeavor, even though his peers find him contemptuous, including the major above him. When Seb uncovers a duel, which he considers a murder, the major does not want it investigated. Knowing that he is right, Seb makes his disdain for the major obvious. In the process of his investigation, Seb finds allies in a corporal named Evans, and his native servants, as the officers close ranks and try to prevent him from finding the truth. Overcoming the brotherhood of officers is a difficult task in an army made up of aristocrats who bought their commissions, men who worked their way up the ranks, and common soldiers. Kilworth's latest Ensign Early novel draws on all the class conflicts, action under fire, and pigheadedness of the British army to entertain any and every historical-fiction fan. --booklist, May 1, 2011
