Gr. 6-9. This survey, in the new History of Drugs series, stands apart from such conventional report fodder as Randi Mehling's Marijuana: The Straight Facts (2003). Instead of rehashing previously published materials, it actually reprints them--beginning with a translation of a sixteenth-century report on the drug's use in India, ending with a 2003 study of hemp's many nondrug uses, and in between offering a series of landmark historical and clinical studies that chronicle both our understanding of marijuana's effects and our conflicting attitudes toward them. The dry prose and unappealing page design will limit this to researchers, but its atypical approach, healthy quantities of additional documentation at the end, and an international point of view earn it a place in deeper subject collections.
