General Chemistry Laboratory for Engineers - Fall 2011 INTRODUCTION TO THE PHYSICS LABORATORY The Physics Laboratory is an interdisciplinary course designed to further scientific discovery methods, critical- thinking tools, and presentation abilities. Students will learn the basic skills necessary to conduct an experiment and present a laboratory report in a competent manner. This includes, but is not limited to, spreadsheet applications, technical writing, some statistical analysis, and the use of a variety of computer-interfaced measuring devices. Students must demonstrate a fundamental understanding of basic computer operations. Computer competency will be evaluated by the instructor through a series of activities and exercises that are included in this manual. Specific computer applications used in this course include the spreadsheet program Microsoft Excel, the word-processing program Microsoft Word, and the lab equipment control program Logger Pro. To ensure compatibility, students should use these programs. Students' success in the physics laboratory is associated with being prepared, punctual, efficient, polite, safety conscious, inquisitive, critical, and proactive in the face of difficulties and setbacks. Students ought to record/save all their experimental data and follow the report format recommended in this manual-the laboratory instructor may make changes to the report format recommended here or use his/her own format. The SI (Systeme Internationale) system of units is used throughout this manual. This system is also known as the metric system. Throughout the manual, the presentation of the physics theories needed for the different experiments is mostly algebra based with some calculus-based mathematical derivations when necessary. Physics is the application of mathematics to natural phenomena. The occasional use of calculus should not discourage students taking algebra- based physics because the end result of the mathematical derivations.
