By the ‘20s the closeness to Hollywood meant stars like Charlie Chaplin, and Douglas Fairbanks, had luxurious second homes here. By the late ‘30s Del Mar’s race track peopled the area with contrasts--kids who’d struggled though the Depression, wearing shoes only in winter, performed service jobs for such glamorous visitors as Prince Aly Khan and Betty Grable.

About the Author:

Wendy Haskett began writing professionally at 14, for BBC radio "Children’s Hour." After immigrating to California in the 1960s, she combined freelance writing with teaching yoga, and spent the ‘80s writing features for the Los Angeles Times. During the’90s, while teaching writing at MiraCosta College, she began a local history column for the North County Times which, after 300 columns, evolved into the Backward Glance book series.
